Chapter 9: Curtis
Seat Work: (In Journal)
·      What is his age?
·      What is his ethnicity?
·      What is his contribution?
·      What is his reason for becoming involved?
·      What are the effects of his association?
·      Talk about the change that takes place in Curtis as he realizes the important things in life. Discuss his decision to "give her some deeds instead (pg. 41) rather than all talk.
·      Make note of his mention of "this old man with no teeth and a straw hat" that shows him how to stake the tomatoes. Who is this man and how has he changed since he became involved with the garden?
·      Discuss how Fleischman tells us what Curtis's ethnicity is (page 43). "field slave" & "share-cropper"
·      In the course of the novel, a homeless young man named Royce comes to live in the garden. Talk about Royce and his involvement with other characters. (He is discussed more in future chapters so it is important to make special note of him at this point).
